SOSU Devlog #00 - Workin' for the Weekend
YO! whats up! Just wanted to drop in and do a mini announcement/update on what I've been doing. . . for anyone wondering I wanted to make this in video format however after discoveries and other life stuff I decided to just do flat out announcements across all what I make. Most importantly the template releases.
################################################################# NEW TEMPLATES COMING UP! ###########################################################
So while I was creating the 2D Side Scroller Pro in Renpy I ended up making some cool discoveries. With my floor mesh creator I eventually looked up some ways to create point and click movement. After bashing my brain against the keyboard, not sleeping and chugging butt loads of coffee. I figured out an optimized A* pathfinding and sightlines method to create easy point and click movement. So basically. You draw a floor mesh, create holes inside the floor polygon that the player will go around, and that's it system handles the rest. I made and example case with my favorite characters below (I had barely beat Sam and Max Hit the Road as of recent because I had a lil time on my hands, n its great). I tweaked some more stuff and I also added depth using a vanishing point method. In the near future plan on releasing the . . .
2D Point 'N' Click Adventure in Ren'Py
This will have key stuff for creating point and click adventure games, while keeping the ease of creating and placing entities in developers created areas. As of now it's in its early stages, but I'd say its 50% close to being at v0.1. ## Heres a test with my bot stuff, I thank God because this is an old vid of the movement test and the camera jitters, as of posting, I found and fixed that issue. so W. ##
After I started working on a side project (phone game idea that I wanna sell on itch.io/playstore/and hopefully ios store) I figured out how to make the follower follow the created lines, even follow branched off points too. This template is specifically for route following, you draw route and the follower follows.
2D Route Follower in Ren'Py
Simple as that, so basically it will find the fastest route to the closest point on the line to your mouse. I also added options for devs to link routes to renpy buttons so that when you click a textbutton or a imagebutton, and that point is tied to that button, on click the follower will travel to that point. This primarily is geared towards map screens adding an extra omph! to it. But if your creative can be used for so much more. This one is basically done just need to do more testing and after I'll make an announcement, so stay tuned.
################################################################# 2DSS PRO NEWS! ########################################################### Cool thing about working on the above templates is that I find more fixes and things to add, for example in a future update, I plan on adding route lines for npcs, so you can give specific npcs routes to follow, this will be setup to be used for cutscenes and even camera controls for cutscenes. I do have a layout for the next 2D Side Scroller Pro in Renpy updates. They aren't as grandiose, but this is a setup for those bigger updates. Here are the features that I'll be fixing or adding to 2DSS Pro v0.2 ______________________________________________________________
- Slight optimization boosts // Render only what's seen on screen
- Entity hider // for people who don't want to remove an entity they can just hide id or make it reappear with a variable
- Anchor player to stage // Yeah this ones my bad the player isn't anchored to the stage so if the camera panned which I haven't added an option for that yet but if it did the player would slide with the camera
- Independent left and right images // I made the standard images of left and right just flipped image versions BUT I feel like what if the dev wanted to add distinct things on one side of the image, well I plan on adding an option for that.
- Turn toggle // Another thing I wanted to add but yeah I forgot was the ability for the dev to set whether they event wanted a turn delay. SO thats being added too.
- *MAYBE* Save Function // If I can figure it out where ever the player is that the player can save their game and the exact spot they were in will be saved aswell. As of now the nearest load point will be where the player is at (if player was inbetween dialogue then the save will also save the players location)
______________________________________________________________
The future updates will have bigger additions as of now gotta do baby steps before I start making these big jumps.
################################################################# 2DSS LITE HELP! ########################################################### I am also announcing that I will be taking in bug reports for 2D Side Scroller Lite in Renpy fixing bugs that are present in the current iteration of the lite version of the 2DSS Lite. Look in the description to see how to send bug reports. Thank you for your help!
################################################################# FINAL WORDS ###########################################################
Uh! yeh a lot is happening behind the scenes, I hope I can churn these updates/templates out very fast, but they'll be out soon enough. Thank you for your guys support I appreciate it :) Talk to ya soon - The Sauce
